Austria creative: Platform to strengthen intellectual property

Just in time for World Intellectual Property Day, the newly founded platform Austria creative presents itself to the public. The objective of this independent organisation is to increase visibility of the economic significance of the cultural and creative industries in Austria and to represent the needs and interests of rights holders and rights users.

The first joint activity of Austria creative is the commissioning of an impact study to capture the economic significance of the creative industries. Gernot Graninger, General Manager of AKM and one of the founding fathers of the platform says: “Intellectual property promotes innovation and investments – with Austria creative we show to what extent culture creates jobs and supports the national economy. For a sustainable development it is essential to have a proper legal framework, only then will the next generation of creators be able to live from their creative ideas.”

Founding partners of Austria creative come from the different areas of arts and culture, companies and organisations like the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, the Association of Austrian newspapers, Austrian publishers and booksellers association, Film and Music Austria, Association of the Advertising and Market Communication, the Vienna State Opera, the International Federation of the Phonographic industry ifpi Austria, Austrian Professional Copyright Users Association and the Copyright Society AKM.

Their contribution to the promotion of cultural vitality and diversity extends far beyond the country’s borders: with partner organisations in other countries there will be a European alliance for the civic and creative industries addressing topics of international relevance and engaging in dialogue with stakeholders at EU level.

World Intellectual Property Day is observed annually on April 26th. The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization in 2000 to raise awareness for the importance and value of creativity and intellectual property.
