Mobilisation for Ukraine
GESAC welcomes the joint declaration of EU Ministers of Culture and Media, adopted on the occasion of the Informal Council meeting that took place in Angers on 7-8 March.
Through this declaration, the 27 ministers underline the role played by culture for the building of democracies and peace and express their solidarity with artists, journalists and cultural operators in Ukraine. They call on the EU to take concrete actions.
GESAC also welcome the line of support from some Member States by giving significant credit to cultural institutions that offer to host Ukrainian artists and journalists. The French Minister of Culture, Roselyne Bachelot-Narquin, announced yesterday that France had mobilised a fund of € 1 million for this purpose.
Authors’ societies in neighbouring countries of Ukraine have already launched concrete actions, such as the creation of special funds, the opening of “creators houses” for refugees, the organisation of concerts, fundraising events, among others.
Our community is also coordinating at international level to create dedicated funding schemes and campaigns to help the people and creators of Ukraine that are suffering from the devastating impact of the current war.
We call on European institutions and the Member States to lend and expand their support to these efforts.
