26 April: World Intellectual Property Day

26 April is World Intellectual Property day. It’s a day that puts the benefits of intellectual property in the limelight, highlighting its essential influence on the success of culture and its diversity, despite the threats posed by some developments in the digital market.

The World Intellectual property Organisation (WIPO) chose an appropriate theme for this year’s IP day: Digital Creativity: Culture Reimagined.

Currently, large amounts of money being made from cultural content by some platform services don’t find their way to the creators. GESAC has made addressing this situation its number one priority. It calls on European decision-makers to amend copyright legislation to clarify that the safe harbour regime which some platform services use to avoid copyright liability can no longer be wrongfully invoked.
