Sacem and Socan sign transatlantic agreement

French authors’ society and GESAC member Sacem signed an unprecedented transatlantic deal last week with Canadian authors’ society SOCAN. With this agreement, Sacem is now mandated to represent SOCAN’s more than 135,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers for administering and collecting towards multi-territorial digital service providers (DSPs) in Europe.

SOCAN is the first North American collective society to mandate a European collective management organisation (CMO). The mandate will be handled through Armonia, the first European licensing hub. The deal will create more transparency and efficiency in the handling of SOCAN members’ rights, as they will now have a single point of collection for the continent.
